On this day, the State Reorganisation Act was passed in 1956, assuming the suggestions of the Commission constituted under the chairmanship of Fazal Ali. On November 27, 1947, after the constitution was formed, Dr Rajendra Prasad, president of the Constituent Assembly, was affairs of retired Allahabad High Court Judge S.K. A four-member commission headed by Dhar was constituted.

The Commission was asked to examine whether the reorganization of the States on linguistic basis is appropriate or not. The Commission submitted its report in December 1948. In this report, the Commission supported the restructuring of the States on administrative grounds. On December 22, 1953, a second commission was formed under the chairmanship of Fazal Ali. The Commission submitted its report to the Centre in September 30, 1955.

The Parliament accepted the recommendations of the Commission with some changes and passed the State Reorganisation Act in 1956. Under the Act, there were five Union Territories in India, apart from fourteen States of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Bombay, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Madras, Mysore, Orissa (presently Odisha), Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
